'Firewall Update Required' Pop-Up Scam
During a routine examination of misleading websites, our researchers uncovered the "Firewall Update Required" scam, which, upon investigation, was identified as a technical support scam. This fraudulent scheme falsely asserts that the user's device is infected due to an outdated Windows firewall security.
The primary objective is to trick victims into reaching out to fake tech support, engaging them in an elaborate scheme that can lead to a range of serious issues. Upon accessing a site running "Firewall Update Required," visitors are confronted with explicit adult-oriented content overlaid by pop-ups mimicking the Windows color palette and formatting.
The foremost pop-up, titled "Firewall Update Required," declares that the "Windows firewall security" is not up to date. The background window asserts that the user's system has reported malware infections, listing potential threats and urging the user to call "Customer Support." Pressing the "Update" button on the topmost pop-up closes the window.
The pop-up detailing the threats takes precedence, with the pornographic content replaced by a well-known Windows wallpaper. However, this fake alert is swiftly covered by additional pop-ups. One of these windows alleges a "System Failure," stating that a software update encountered an error. The user is warned that certain system features were disabled for security reasons, and a pop-up atop all others requests a password to unlock the device. Throughout the scam, the user is prompted to call the provided helpline.
It is crucial to emphasize that all information presented by "Firewall Update Required" is false, and this scam has no affiliation with Windows, Microsoft, or any legitimate products, services, or companies.
The scam unfolds after contact is established with the scammers, who perpetuate the facade of being "expert technicians," "customer support," "Microsoft-certified technicians," and so on. Typically, tech support scammers request remote access to victims' computers, often through legitimate software like TeamViewer, UltraViewer, AnyDesk, or similar programs.
