Image Scanner Black Scan Problem
Image scanners can have their fair share of issues, just like every computer peripheral. One of the common issues with scanning devices is the scanned image coming out completely black, instead of replicating the original.
If you are encountering black scan issues with your scanner, this article will give you a brief guide and a couple of ideas you can try to fix the issue, regardless of your device's brand or manufacturer.
-
Reinstall the scanner's driver
The first thing you should try is reinstalling your scanner's driver. A lot of seemingly random issues stem from driver issues and corrupt or faulty driver installations.
To reinstall your scanner's driver, right click your start menu button and select "Device manager". In the device manager window, find the category named "Imaging devices". Expand the category, right click your scanner's name in the list and choose "Uninstall". This will remove the driver completely.
At this step, it's advisable to reboot your PC. When your system boots up, Windows might attempt to install generic scanner drivers. However, you should either get your software CD that came with the scanner or visit the manufacturer's website and download the most current driver installer package for your respective operating system.
Run the driver installer package and follow the onscreen instructions until the driver install completes. You might need to reboot your system once more at this point, depending on your OS version and your scanner.
If this does not fix the issue, consider the next step.

Reinstall the manufacturer's application provided with the scanner
Almost all scanners have a companion application for managing the scanner's work and for fine-tuning certain settings. Once again, you will need to either find the CD that came with your scanner or better yet, download the latest version of the scanner companion application from the manufacturer's website.
If you already have the application installed but are experiencing problems, uninstall the app first, then run the installer and perform a clean install.
If the application offers a settings reset that will revert everything back to defaults, use that as well, as it might help with the black scan issue.
If both of those methods fail, and you are doing everything properly when initiating a scan in your software of choice, there might be a hardware isssue with your scanner. Consider taking it to service and having it checked by a qualified technician, preferably one working as official support for the manufacturer.
