MNX Ransomware is a New Phobos Clone
MNX ransomware is a new clone that expands the Phobos family of ransomware variants.
MNX behaves largely like other recent Phobos clones. It will encrypt files on connected system drives and ask for ransom.
Encrypted files go through a name change, as the MNX ransomware appends a lengthy new extension consisting of the user's ID string, the email used by the hackers and the ".MNX" string. A file called "image.jpg" will turn into "image.jpg.id[victim ID].[decrypt@techie.com].MNX".
File types that will be encrypted on an infected system include the usual - documents, media files, archives and databases.
Once the ransomware finishes encrypting the system, it will drop its ransom demands inside two files named "info.txt" and "info.hta". The HTA file is displayed in a pop-up window and contains the more exhaustive version of the ransom note, which reads as follows:
