Zate ransomware is a new ransomware variant that expands the already large family of Djvu clones.

The new Djvu variant encrypts files and behaves just like its siblings. The Zate ransomware will scramble databases, document files, archives and media files on the targeted system. Executable files will be encrypted as well.

Once encrypted, files receive the ".zate" extension. This will turn a file called "notes.txt" into "notes.txt.zate".

The ransom demands are deposited inside a text file named "_readme.txt". The note asks for $490 in ransom payment, with the ransom growing to $980 if unpaid within 72 hours. The full note goes as follows:
