Zate Ransomware ist eine neue Ransomware-Variante, die die bereits große Familie der Djvu-Klone erweitert.
Die neue Djvu-Variante verschlüsselt Dateien und verhält sich genauso wie ihre Geschwister. Die Zate-Ransomware verschlüsselt Datenbanken, Dokumentdateien, Archive und Mediendateien auf dem Zielsystem. Ausführbare Dateien werden ebenfalls verschlüsselt.
Nach der Verschlüsselung erhalten Dateien die Erweiterung „.zate“. Dadurch wird eine Datei namens "notes.txt" in "notes.txt.zate" umgewandelt.
Die Lösegeldforderungen werden in einer Textdatei namens „_readme.txt“ hinterlegt. Die Notiz fordert eine Lösegeldzahlung von 490 US-Dollar, wobei das Lösegeld auf 980 US-Dollar ansteigt, wenn es nicht innerhalb von 72 Stunden bezahlt wird. Die vollständige Note lautet wie folgt:
