'Suggestd quit unexpectedly' Mac Error

'Suggestd quit unexpectedly' is a common Mac error, which seems to have been bothering users for over five years. The first thing that we should mention about this issue is that it is part of a legitimate Mac service, so there is no malware involved. Of course, this does not change the fact that seeing the 'Suggestd quit unexpectedly' error all the time can be rather annoying – especially considering the fact that some users see it every few minutes.

What is Suggestd Meant to do?

This component is part of a Mac service, which is responsible for handling content and interactions with various core Mac features – Spotlight, Messages, Mail, and more. It is also involved in the execution of specific key combinations, as well as responsible for enhancing the QuickType keyboard service. Seeing the 'Suggestd quit unexpectedly' may result in inability to use specific apps that rely on this service – if you experience this issue, you should try to resolve it immediately.

Rebuild the Spotlight Database and Drive Index

These two fixes appear to work for most users - they are meant to rebuilt the databases and indexes of services associated with the suggestd component. To fix the 'Suggestd quit unexpectedly' error, restart your Mac in Safe Mode. You can do this by holding down the Shift button during system startup.

Once there, load the Terminal through Applications -> Utilities. Then, enter the following commands:

  • Sudo mdutil –E / - this rebuilds the Spotlight database.
  • Sudo mdutil –I on / - this rebuilds the drive index.

You will be prompted to enter your administrator password after each of these commands. The first one should finish relatively fast, but the second one might take more to complete.

  • Wolfgang Wunderlich :

Its a typo in this article, so type it - don#t copy -> then it works.

Sudo mdutil –E / does not work
    sudo mdutil -E / works

In this article "–" is not "-" !!

First is alt and "–" - second ist only "-"

  • Steve:

terminal returns "invalid path `–E'", " invalid path `–I'" or "invalid path `on'", depending on which command is run.
