ProgressLauncher Mac Adware

ads adware popup

Our researchers came across the ProgressLauncher adware while examining new file samples. This software belongs to the AdLoad malware family and is designed to generate profits for its creators by displaying unwanted and potentially harmful advertisements.

Adware, short for advertising-supported software, can display ads in various interfaces, but specific conditions may be necessary for it to deliver these ads, such as using a compatible browser or system or visiting specific websites. Even if ProgressLauncher doesn't actually show ads, its presence still poses a threat to the safety of the device and user.

Advertising-supported software allows for the placement of ads that promote online scams, unreliable or harmful software, and even potential malware. Clicking on some of these ads can trigger scripts that initiate stealthy downloads or installations. It's important to note that products or services advertised through these ads are likely endorsed by scammers who exploit affiliate programs to earn illegitimate commissions.

While AdLoad applications typically have the ability to hijack web browsers, our analysis did not reveal these characteristics in ProgressLauncher.

Adware often includes data-tracking features, and this may also be the case with ProgressLauncher. The data collected may encompass browsing and search history, internet cookies, usernames, passwords, personally identifiable information, financial details, and more. This harvested data can then be sold to third parties for monetization purposes.

How Can Adware on Your System Affect Your Online Safety?

Adware on your system can significantly affect your online safety in several ways:

  • Excessive Advertisements: Adware inundates your web browsing experience with an excessive number of advertisements. These ads can be annoying and disruptive, making it difficult to focus on legitimate content. Additionally, clicking on these ads can lead to unwanted and potentially malicious websites.
  • Privacy Invasion: Adware often has data-tracking capabilities. It can monitor your online activities, including the websites you visit, search queries, and even the content you interact with. This invasion of privacy can compromise your personal information and online behavior.
  • Risk of Malware Infections: Some adware may display deceptive or malicious ads that lead to the installation of malware on your system. Clicking on these ads can result in the unintentional download and execution of harmful software, including viruses, Trojans, or ransomware.
  • Browser Hijacking: Certain adware can hijack your web browser settings, altering your homepage, search engine, and default settings without your consent. This can make it challenging to restore your preferred browser configuration.
  • Slow System Performance: Adware consumes system resources, causing your computer to slow down. This can result in decreased overall performance, longer load times for web pages, and sluggishness in general.
  • Increased Data Usage: Adware can generate additional network traffic by constantly downloading and displaying ads. This increased data usage can be particularly concerning if you have limited data plans or pay for internet usage by the amount of data consumed.
  • Exposure to Scams: Adware can display ads promoting online scams, deceptive offers, and fraudulent services. Users may be lured into engaging with these scams, potentially leading to financial losses or identity theft.
  • Compromised Security: Adware can weaken your overall cybersecurity posture. Its presence on your system may indicate that your computer is vulnerable to other security threats, and it may even act as a gateway for other malware to infiltrate your device.
