During a standard review conducted as part of our investigation into newly submitted items, we came across MountainVibe, an adware application. Our comprehensive examination unveiled that MountainVibe is categorized as adware, specifically belonging to the AdLoad malware family.
Adware functions by orchestrating intrusive ad campaigns. This software unleashes advertisements on websites visited by users. These adverts predominantly push online scams, unreliable or harmful software, and even malicious programs. In certain instances, these intrusive ads can be activated through clicks, stealthily initiating downloads or installations.
It's worth noting that while authentic products and services could potentially surface through these advertisements, their true developers are unlikely to endorse them. More often than not, these promotions are orchestrated by malicious actors exploiting the affiliate programs associated with the content, all in an effort to gain illegitimate commissions.
Advertising-supported software often requires specific circumstances to launch its invasive advertising campaigns. These conditions might include browser and system specifications, visits to particular websites, and similar factors. Regardless of whether MountainVibe showcases advertisements or not, its mere presence poses a threat to the security of both devices and users.
Notably, the AdLoad adware is known to possess browser-hijacking capabilities. However, our analysis did not uncover any such functionalities in the case of MountainVibe.
Furthermore, it's highly likely that this rogue application engages in the collection of private information. Adware typically targets a range of data, including URLs visited, viewed webpages, search queries, internet cookies, usernames, passwords, personally identifiable information, and even credit card numbers. The amassed data can then be monetized through its sale to third parties.
