What is LoyalShroud Mac Adware?

During our analysis of newly submitted malicious files, our research team came across an application known as LoyalShroud. Upon thorough investigation, we have determined that LoyalShroud is a type of adware associated with the AdLoad malware family.

Adware, short for advertising-supported software, operates by running intrusive advertising campaigns. This software displays advertisements on various interfaces, promoting online scams, unreliable or harmful software, and even malware. Clicking on these intrusive ads can trigger scripts that perform stealthy downloads or installations.

It's important to note that while some legitimate products or services may be advertised through these channels, they are often endorsed by scammers who exploit affiliate programs to earn illicit commissions.

It is worth mentioning that ad-supported software may not display ads under certain circumstances, such as incompatible browser or system specifications, lack of visits to specific websites, or other unsuitable conditions. However, the presence of LoyalShroud on a system still poses a risk to the device and user safety, even if it doesn't show ads.

Moreover, LoyalShroud potentially possesses browser hijacking capabilities, which are commonly found in AdLoad adware. However, we did not observe any instances of browser hijacking during our testing.

Furthermore, this malicious application incorporates data-tracking functionalities. It collects various types of targeted data, including browsing and search engine histories, internet cookies, personally identifiable information, usernames and passwords, credit card numbers, and more. The collected information can be shared with or sold to third parties, potentially including cybercriminals.

How Can Adware End Up on Your Mac?

Adware can end up on your Mac through various means. Here are some common ways adware may find its way onto your system:

  • Software Bundling: Adware often gets bundled with free or pirated software downloads. When you install such software, the adware may be included as an additional component, and if you're not careful during the installation process, you might inadvertently agree to install the adware along with the desired application.
  • Fake Software Updates: Adware can be disguised as software updates or system utilities. You may encounter pop-up notifications or websites claiming that your software or system needs an update. However, clicking on these deceptive update prompts can lead to the installation of adware instead.
  • Malicious Websites: Visiting malicious or compromised websites can expose your Mac to adware. These websites may contain malicious advertisements or scripts that exploit vulnerabilities in your browser or system, resulting in the automatic download and installation of adware.
  • Phishing Emails or Downloads: Adware can also be distributed through phishing emails that trick you into downloading and installing malicious attachments. These emails may appear legitimate, often impersonating well-known companies or services. Clicking on suspicious links or downloading files from untrusted sources can introduce adware onto your Mac.
  • Fake Flash Player Installers: Adware distributors sometimes create fake Flash Player installers that actually contain adware. These installers are often encountered on websites that prompt you to update your Flash Player. It's important to download software only from official sources and verify the legitimacy of the update requests.
