GridMapper Mac Adware

ads adware popups

Our researchers uncovered GridMapper during a routine examination of new file submissions to the VirusTotal platform. Upon investigation, it was determined that GridMapper is a form of adware associated with the AdLoad malware family. This application is designed to conduct intrusive advertising campaigns and may possess additional harmful functionalities.

Adware, short for advertising-supported software, typically operates by displaying advertisements on visited websites and other interfaces. It's important to note that certain conditions may be necessary for adware to function as intended, such as compatible browser/system specifications or visits to specific sites. Even if GridMapper does not deliver advertisements, it may still pose a threat to device and user safety.

Ads presented by adware commonly promote online scams, untrustworthy or hazardous software, and sometimes even malware. Clicking on these advertisements can trigger scripts that initiate stealthy downloads or installations.

It's crucial to be aware that any seemingly genuine content encountered through these adverts is likely endorsed by scammers exploiting affiliate programs to gain illegitimate commissions.

While many AdLoad apps have browser-hijacking capabilities, our analysis did not reveal these features in GridMapper. However, it is common for advertising-supported software to have data-tracking abilities, and this may also apply to GridMapper. The tracked information may include visited URLs, viewed webpages, search queries, Internet cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, financial data, and more. This sensitive information could be shared with or sold to third parties, posing a risk to user privacy and security.

How Can Adware Compromise Your Online Experience?

Adware can compromise your online experience in various ways, negatively impacting both the performance and security of your device. Here are several ways in which adware can compromise your online activities:

Intrusive Advertisements:
Adware bombards your browsing experience with unwanted and intrusive advertisements, including pop-ups, banners, and interstitial ads. This can make websites difficult to navigate and disrupt your focus.

Browser Slowdown:
The constant display of ads by adware consumes system resources, leading to slower browsing speeds and decreased overall performance. This can result in a frustrating online experience.

Redirects to Unwanted Websites:
Adware may redirect your browser to websites you did not intend to visit. These sites could be potentially harmful, containing scams, phishing attempts, or malicious content.

Compromised Privacy:
Adware often tracks your online activities, collecting information such as browsing history, search queries, and even personally identifiable details. This invasion of privacy can lead to targeted advertising and may result in the misuse of your data.

Unwanted Browser Toolbars and Extensions:
Adware may install additional browser toolbars or extensions without your consent. These can alter your browser settings, leading to a less user-friendly experience.

Increased Vulnerability to Malware:
Some adware may serve as a gateway for more malicious threats. Clicking on ads generated by adware could lead to the inadvertent download and installation of malware on your device.

Unwanted Software Installations:
Adware may initiate the download and installation of other unwanted software on your device. This could include browser hijackers, fake system optimizers, or other potentially harmful applications.
