How to Fix Update Error 0X800F0982 on Windows 10

Windows Updates are mandatory to install if you want to keep your operating system in excellent condition and protected from malware or hacking attempts. However, many users encounter issues with the Windows Update utility. The errors they see are typically accompanied by an error code that, unfortunately, does not tell them much about the potential solution. One of the recent problems that Windows users encounter is Update Error 0X800F0982. It appears to affect Windows 10 users mostly, and it seems to be associated with the following updates - KB4493509, KB4493509, and KB4489899.

While it is possible to simply ignore the error and leave the updates hanging, this is not a good solution. Our advice to users is to try to troubleshoot the issue and resolve it. Below, we have some tips on how to fix the update error 0X800F0982 on Windows 10.

Use the Troubleshooter to Fix Update Error 0X800F0982

Windows 10 has an embedded troubleshooting utility, which can be used to fix various operating system issues, including system updates.

  1. Open Start Menu -> Troubleshoot Settings.
  2. Select Additional Troubleshooters.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to see if Windows can resolve the issue automatically.

Keep in mind that you will probably need to restart your computer once the troubleshooter is done. After you do this, see if the update error 0X800F0982 is still there.

Reset the Windows Update Service

There might be an issue with the Windows Update Service, which is triggering the error code we are discussing. To fix this, you could either restart your system completely or only restart the services associated with Windows Update. If you opt to do the latter, then here are the steps you need to follow:

  1. Go to Start Menu -> Command Prompt. Right-click it and select Run as Administrator.
  2. Type the following commands and make sure to press Enter after each one - net stop wuauserv, net stop cryptSvc, net stop bits, net stop msiserver.
  3. Then, type these commands one by one - net start wuauserv, net start cryptSvc, net start bits, net start msiserver.

Force Windows to Install the Update

The last thing to try is to bypass the error through Windows PowerShell. This might not always work, but some users report that it fixed the issue for them.

  1. Go to Start Menu -> Windows PowerShell. Right-click it and select Run as Administrator.
  2. Enter the command wuauclt.exe /UPDATENOW.
  3. Restart your PC if you see a notification that the update was installed.
