How To Clear Mail Storage Space on Mac

Your Mac's Mail app can be configured in a way that allows it to take up considerable space on your storage drives over time. With years of use, your Mail app can cause significant amounts of data to accumulate on your drives. This article will give you a quick guide on how to clear up that storage space.

First, in order to check and see how much space exactly is taken up by data originating from your Mail app, do the following:

   Open the Apple menu

2. Click on 'About this Mac'

3. Click on 'Storage'

4. Select 'Manage'

5. Select the 'Mail' app icon in the left sidebar

This will show you how much storage space your Mail app is taking up on your Mac.

Since plain text emails only take up a few kilobytes of data at worst, still insignificant drive space, even at thousands of emails, the most likely emails that take space are the ones that have file attachments. If you want to keep individual emails with attachments while discarding the bulk of them, you will need to manually go over each important attachment email and archive it manually.

Once you are ready to clean up the bulk of your attachment emails, do the following:

1. Open the Apple menu

2. Click on 'Storage' and select 'Manage'

3. Select the 'Mail' app icon in the left sidebar

4. Select 'Attachments' and finally click 'Delete'

This will remove all mail attachments and significantly reduce the footprint of your Mail app on your storage disks.
