Bitcoin Blackmail Email Scares Victims with Empty Threats

cryptocurrency

"Bitcoin blackmail email" is yet another variation of an old scam that has been circulating for a while. The template used is very similar, only the entities running the campaign are likely different.

This type of scam revolves around sending millions of malicious spam emails to users. The victims are told that the threat actor has their password, likely grabbed from one of the huge dumps of leaked passwords online. The victim is then told that the hacker recorded a compromising video showing the victim watching adult content on their computer.

The fake compromising video is used as a tool to blackmail the victim into paying the threat actor $2,400 worth of cryptocurrency.

Of course, all of this is always fake and a low-effort way to use leaked password dumps to blackmail people and scare them. Nobody has hacked your camera or captured video of you or your screen. This is a simple social engineering scare tactic to scare and confuse you, get you acting on impulse, out of fright.

Delete similar scams if you find them in your inbox and flag them as spam, and you will be safe from future efforts from the same threat actor.
