'There was a Problem Resetting your PC' Windows 10 Error

Reset this PC' is a new Windows feature, which allows users to restore their Windows installation to a fresh state without losing any of their files. Of course, they also have the ability to perform a full reset, which would wipe out their personal files as well, but the purpose of the feature is to prevent this from happening. In short, 'Reset this PC' can be used instead of reinstalling Windows completely, saving the user a lot of time.

However, some users report that they cannot use the 'Reset this PC' feature because they encounter an unexpected error saying 'There was a Problem Resetting your PC.' If you are also experiencing this issue, then here are some of the potential fixes you can try:

Use Windows Startup Repair

To perform this step, you will need a bootable DVD or USB copy of Windows 10. After you boot from the USB/DVD, you will be presented with the option to either install Windows or open the 'Repair your computer' section. Select it and go to Troubleshoot -> Reset this PC -> System Restore.

Use the Windows 'bootrec' Commands

Failing to reset your PC might be a symptom of an issue with the Master Boot Record (MBR.) One way to fix such issues is to use the 'bootrec' commands, which can be run by:

  1. Boot from a USB or DVD with a copy of Windows 10.
  2. Go to Repair Your Computer -> Troubleshoot -> Command Prompt.
  3. Use the commands
  • bootrec /fixMBR
  • bootrec /fixBoot
  • bootrec /rebuildBCD

Use the System File Checker (SFC) or CHKDSK Utilities

The SFC utility can fix a wide range of Windows issues. To run it, you will need to boot into Windows and go to Start Menu -> Command Prompt. Enter sfc /scannow to initialize the scan and fix.

The CHKDSK utility is also something you should run when encountering the 'There was a Problem Resetting your PC' Windows 10 Error. You will need to run the CHKDSK utility for your system partition. For example, if Windows is installed in C:\, then the command will be chkdsk C: /f /r /x.
