Search-UIX Browser Extension

browser hijacker

Search-UIX is a malicious browser extension that functions as a browser hijacker. Within this category of software, it alters browser settings to promote counterfeit search engines through redirects.

While there is a fraudulent Internet search site sharing the name searchuix.com, this was not the search engine endorsed by Search-UIX during our analysis. During our investigation, this browser hijacker directed redirects to the thesearchfeeds.com website.

On our test computer, Search-UIX set thesearchfeeds.com as the default homepage, search engine, and URL for new tabs/windows. Consequently, every time we conducted a web search using the URL bar or opened a new browser tab/window, it led to redirects to the thesearchfeeds.com site.

As previously mentioned, there exists a sham search engine with the same name as Search-UIX – searchuix.com. It's possible that this browser extension could also generate redirects to the searchuix.com page.

Counterfeit search engines typically lack the ability to provide genuine search results, so they typically redirect users to legitimate Internet search websites. In the case of thesearchfeeds.com, it redirects to Google (google.com). However, it's worth noting that the destination may vary based on factors like the user's geographic location.

Browser-hijacking software often employs tactics to make removal more challenging, such as limiting access to settings related to removal or reversing changes made by the user.

Additionally, software in this category frequently includes data-tracking capabilities, and this may apply to Search-UIX. The data collected may encompass visited URLs, viewed webpages, search queries, Internet cookies, usernames, passwords, personally identifiable information, financial data, and more. This gathered information may be sold to third parties or exploited for financial gain.

What is a Fake Search Engine?

A fake search engine, also known as a counterfeit search engine or a rogue search engine, is a type of deceptive online service that masquerades as a legitimate search engine but is designed to deceive users for various malicious purposes. Unlike reputable search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo, fake search engines do not provide genuine search results and often engage in harmful or fraudulent activities. Here are some characteristics and purposes of fake search engines:

  • Deceptive Appearance: Fake search engines often mimic the appearance of well-known search engines to appear trustworthy and legitimate. They may have a similar logo, layout, and search bar, making them look convincing at first glance.
  • Redirects and Ads: When users perform searches on these fake search engines, they typically do not provide accurate or relevant search results. Instead, they may redirect users to other websites or display a barrage of intrusive ads, pop-ups, and sponsored links.
  • Data Collection: Many fake search engines collect user data, such as search queries, browsing history, IP addresses, and even personal information. This data can be exploited for various purposes, including targeted advertising or identity theft.
  • Malware Distribution: Some fake search engines are used as a distribution platform for malware. Users who visit these sites may unwittingly download malicious software onto their devices.
  • Phishing: Fake search engines may also engage in phishing activities. They can trick users into entering sensitive information like login credentials, credit card numbers, or personal details on counterfeit login pages.
  • Browser Hijacking: In some cases, fake search engines operate as browser hijackers, altering browser settings without consent. This can include changing the default homepage, search engine, or new tab page to promote their deceptive services.
  • Tech Support Scams: Fake search engines are sometimes associated with tech support scams. They may display fake security alerts, urging users to call a fraudulent tech support number for assistance.
