Beware of the 'Your McAfee Subscription Is Out Of Date' Scam

During our investigation of rogue websites, our research team uncovered the "Your McAfee Subscription Is Out Of Date" scam, which promotes fraudulent software by making false claims about infections on the user's device.

It is very important to note that this scam has no association with the real McAfee anti-virus software or its developer McAfee Corp.

Upon accessing a webpage featuring the "Your McAfee Subscription Is Out Of Date" scam, our team encountered a fake system scanning process that claimed to detect severe threats on the visitor's device. The scam then displayed a pop-up window prompting the user to renew their McAfee subscription to remove viruses. However, these claims are entirely false since no website can detect threats on a visitor's device.

In most cases, scams like "Your McAfee Subscription Is Out Of Date" are used to endorse harmful software such as fake anti-viruses, adware, browser hijackers, and potentially unwanted applications (PUAs). These scams can even proliferate trojans, ransomware, and other malware.

Furthermore, these deceptive schemes could also be used by scammers to obtain commissions for promoting genuine products or services through abusing the content's affiliate programs. However, even if the scheme promotes genuine content, there are no guarantees that it will continue to do so. Additionally, these scams can redirect users to malicious pages that mimic legitimate websites.

What Should You Never Interact With Antivirus Interfaces and Warnings You See on Websites?

It is advised that you never interact with antivirus interfaces and warnings that you see on websites. Scammers often use fake antivirus warnings to trick users into downloading and installing malware or purchasing fake antivirus software. These warnings may claim that your device is infected with a virus or that your antivirus software is out of date. They may also try to get you to call a fake tech support number or provide personal information to resolve the issue.

It's important to remember that legitimate antivirus software will never display a warning or pop-up in your browser. If you see such warnings or interfaces, do not click on any buttons or links, do not provide any personal information, and do not call any phone numbers. Instead, close the browser tab or window immediately.

In addition, it's recommended to have a reputable antivirus software installed on your device and to keep it up-to-date to prevent malware infections. If you're unsure if a warning or interface is legitimate, you can contact your antivirus provider's support team for assistance.
