Web Ace Tab Browser Extension

Our research team encountered a rogue browser extension called Web Ace Tab while conducting a routine check on untrustworthy websites. Although this software claims to provide abstract browser wallpapers, it also makes changes to certain settings to promote the fake search engine webacetab.com through redirects. Furthermore, this extension engages in monitoring users' browsing activities, which categorizes it as a browser hijacker.

Browser-hijacking software typically configures browsers to use endorsed websites, often illegitimate search engines, as their homepages, default search engines, and the URLs for new browser tabs and windows. Web Ace Tab follows this pattern. Consequently, with this extension installed, conducting web searches via the URL bar or opening new browser tabs and windows leads to redirects to the webacetab.com website.

It's important to note that browser hijackers may employ techniques to ensure their persistence, such as blocking access to removal settings or undoing changes made by users to prevent the browser from reverting to its original state.

In most cases, these fake search engines are unable to generate search results, and users end up on legitimate internet search websites. At the time of our research, webacetab.com redirected to the Bing search engine (bing.com). However, it's worth mentioning that the destination could vary, as factors like the user's location might influence the redirects.

Web Ace Tab also possesses data-tracking capabilities. Browser-hijacking software typically gathers various information, including visited URLs, viewed pages, search queries, internet cookies, usernames, passwords, personally identifiable information, and financial data. This sensitive data can then be monetized by selling it to third parties.

Why Should You Always Avoid Fake Search Engines?

Avoiding fake search engines is crucial for several reasons:

  • Security Risks: Fake search engines can pose significant security risks. They may be associated with malicious websites, phishing schemes, or malware distribution. Using them can lead to your system getting infected with viruses, ransomware, or other forms of malware.
  • Privacy Concerns: Fake search engines often collect your search queries, browsing history, and other personal information. This data can be used for tracking your online activities and may be sold to third parties, compromising your privacy.
  • Low-Quality Search Results: Fake search engines usually provide low-quality or irrelevant search results. Using them for online research or information retrieval can be frustrating and counterproductive.
  • Ineffective Results: These search engines may not provide the results you're looking for, leading to wasted time and effort. Legitimate search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo are more likely to deliver accurate and relevant results.
  • Financial Scams: Some fake search engines may display fraudulent ads or sponsored links, leading to scams or financial losses. Users might be tricked into clicking on ads that promote fraudulent products or services.
