Uyit Ransomware is Yet Another Djvu Clone Targeting Files for Encryption
Uyit is a type of ransomware that encrypts files and adds the ".uyit" extension to filenames. It belongs to the Djvu family of clones.
Uyit also drops a "_readme.txt" ransom note file with instructions for victims to contact the attackers within 72 hours in order to pay a lower price ($490) for decryption software and a unique key. Uyit often comes bundled with information stealer malware, which can help spread it more quickly.
An example of how Uyit works is by changing existing filenames - it changes "1.jpg" to "1.jpg.uyit", "2.png" to "2.png.uyit", and so on. It provides two email addresses (support@fishmail.top and datarestorehelp@airmail.cc) for victims to contact the attackers. The ransom note also offers one free file decryption before paying a ransom.
Victims of ransomware should not pay the ransom demands because it does not guarantee that they will receive a decryption key or that their files will be restored. In some cases, cybercriminals may not provide the promised decryption key even after payment is made. Additionally, paying a ransom could encourage criminals to continue their malicious activities and infect other people, thus perpetuating the problem.
