The Beach Tab Browser Extension

browser hijacker

The Beach Tab is a deceptive browser extension that claims to provide users with beach or seaside-themed browser wallpapers. However, our investigation has revealed that this software is, in fact, a browser hijacker. It makes unauthorized changes to browser settings with the intention of promoting the find.allsearchllc.com fake search engine through redirection. Additionally, The Beach Tab secretly monitors users' online activities.

Browser-hijacking software typically alters the default search engines, homepages, and URLs for new tabs or windows to redirect users to specific websites. In the case of find.allsearchllc.com, these settings are manipulated to lead users to the find.allsearchllc.com page. Consequently, with The Beach Tab extension installed, opening new browser tabs or windows and entering search queries into the URL bar will result in automatic redirection to find.allsearchllc.com.

Fake search engines often lack the capability to provide genuine search results, so they frequently redirect users to legitimate internet search engines. During our research, find.allsearchllc.com directed users to the Bing search engine (bing.com). It's essential to note that the destination may vary, as factors like the user's geographical location can influence the redirection.

Furthermore, it's worth noting that browser hijackers often employ tactics to ensure their persistence on a user's system, making their removal more challenging and preventing users from restoring their browsers to their original settings.

Additionally, The Beach Tab possesses the ability to track user data, including visited URLs, viewed webpages, frequently visited sites, IP addresses (including geographical location data), internet cookies, usernames, passwords, personally identifiable information, financial data, and more. This collected data can be monetized by selling it to third parties.

What Are Fake Search Engines?

Fake search engines are websites or search services that appear to offer legitimate search functionality but are designed with malicious intent. These deceptive search engines mimic the appearance and behavior of well-known and trusted search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo. However, their primary purpose is to generate revenue for cybercriminals, compromise user privacy, and redirect web traffic for malicious purposes.

Here are some key characteristics and dangers associated with fake search engines:

  • Misleading Appearance: Fake search engines often have user interfaces that closely resemble popular search engines, making them appear legitimate.
  • Unauthorized Redirects: When users enter search queries or access the search engine, fake search engines may redirect them to other websites, including malicious or deceptive sites.
  • Low-Quality Search Results: These search engines often provide low-quality or irrelevant search results, making it difficult for users to find the information they are looking for.
  • Adware and Malware Distribution: Fake search engines may promote adware or distribute malware by enticing users to download malicious software disguised as browser extensions or updates.
  • Data Collection: Many fake search engines collect user data, including search queries, browsing history, IP addresses, and more, to gather valuable information for cybercriminals.
  • Phishing: Some fake search engines may be used for phishing attacks, attempting to trick users into providing personal or financial information on fraudulent websites.
  • Browser Hijacking: They may hijack browser settings, changing the default homepage, search engine, and new tab settings to force users to use their services.
  • Monetization: Cybercriminals can make money through advertising revenue, affiliate marketing, or selling collected user data to third parties.
