Search Center Rogue Browser Extension

browser hijacker redirect website

During a routine inspection of suspicious websites, our researchers came across the Search Center browser extension. This software is presented as a tool for searching and highlighting text on websites with support for keyboard shortcuts.

Upon closer examination, it was determined that Search Center is, in fact, adware. This extension runs aggressive advertising campaigns and gathers private user data.

Adware, short for advertising-supported software, allows the display of third-party graphical content, such as pop-ups, overlays, and surveys, on visited webpages and interfaces.

It's worth noting that this software may not display intrusive ads under certain conditions, such as when it's incompatible with the user's browser or system, specific websites are not visited, or based on the user's geolocation. However, even if Search Center doesn't show ads, it still poses a threat.

Adware-displayed ads typically promote online scams, unreliable or potentially dangerous software, and even malware. Some of these ads can trigger stealthy downloads and installations when clicked.

It's important to highlight that while legitimate content may occasionally appear in these ads, it's highly unlikely to be officially endorsed in this manner by legitimate parties. More likely, such endorsements are used by scammers who exploit affiliate programs to earn illicit commissions.

Additionally, Search Center has data-tracking capabilities. Ad-supported software typically targets various types of information, including browsing and search histories, internet cookies, usernames and passwords, personally identifiable details, and financial data. This collected information can be monetized by selling it to third parties.

What Are Rogue Browser Extensions?

Rogue browser extensions, also known as malicious browser extensions or browser hijackers, are harmful or unauthorized add-ons or plugins that can be installed in your web browser without your consent or knowledge. These extensions can disrupt your online experience, compromise your privacy, and even lead to security risks. Here are some key characteristics and risks associated with rogue browser extensions:

  • Unauthorized Installation: Rogue browser extensions are often installed on your web browser without your permission. This can happen through deceptive practices, bundled software installations, or by exploiting vulnerabilities in your browser's security.
  • Malicious Intent: Unlike legitimate browser extensions that provide useful features or enhancements, rogue extensions are designed with malicious intent. They may engage in activities like injecting unwanted ads, redirecting your web traffic, or stealing your personal information.
  • Adware and Malware: Many rogue browser extensions fall into the category of adware, meaning they inundate your browser with intrusive and often deceptive advertisements. Some may go beyond adware and behave like malware, compromising your system's security and integrity.
  • Browser Hijacking: Rogue extensions can take control of your browser settings and change your homepage, default search engine, or new tab page. This is known as browser hijacking, and it can be frustrating and difficult to reverse.
  • Data Collection: Some rogue extensions are created to collect your browsing habits, personal information, and online activities. They may sell this data to third parties or use it for their malicious purposes.
  • Performance Issues: Rogue extensions can significantly slow down your browser's performance, causing it to become unresponsive or crash frequently.
  • Privacy Risks: The data collected by rogue extensions may expose your personal and sensitive information to cybercriminals, leading to privacy breaches and identity theft.
