The Mycool search browser extension was uncovered by our researchers during a routine examination of questionable websites. Subsequent analysis revealed that this software functions as a browser hijacker. Mycool search alters browser settings with the aim of promoting the fake search engine search.mycooltab.com through redirects.
Browser-hijacking programs modify default search engines, homepages, and new tab/window URLs by assigning endorsed sites to these settings. Consequently, opening new browser tabs/windows or entering search queries in the URL bar triggers redirects to the promoted webpage, with Mycool search actively endorsing search.mycooltab.com in this manner.
Fake search engines typically lack the capability to generate search results, leading users to legitimate Internet search platforms. During our investigation, search.mycooltab.com directed users to the Bing search engine, but it's important to note that redirections may vary based on factors such as user geolocation.
Additionally, browser hijackers often employ mechanisms to ensure persistence, complicating their removal and hindering users from restoring their browsers to their original states.
Furthermore, Mycool search likely incorporates data-tracking features, a common trait in browser-hijacking software.
