MetricMaster Browser Extension

browser hijacker redirect website

MetricMaster, identified by our team during a routine examination of potentially harmful websites, is a deceptive browser extension that falsely promises a widget for metric system unit conversions. Upon investigation, it was determined that MetricMaster functions as a browser hijacker, making adjustments to browser settings to promote the fake search engine goog.metermasterext.com through redirects.

During testing, MetricMaster configured goog.metermasterext.com as the homepage, the default search engine of the browser, and new tab or window content. Consequently, opening a new browser tab or window, or entering a search query into the URL bar resulted in redirects to the goog.metermasterext.com webpage.

Fake search engines typically lack the ability to provide genuine search results, often redirecting users to legitimate search engines. In our examination, goog.metermasterext.com redirected to the Bing search engine (bing.com), though it should be noted that the destination may vary based on user geolocation.

Browser-hijacking software frequently employs techniques to ensure persistence, complicating its removal and hindering users from restoring their browsers to their original state.

Similar to other browser hijackers, MetricMaster engages in spying on users' browsing activities. The data targeted for collection may encompass visited URLs, viewed webpages, search queries, Internet cookies, usernames and passwords, personally identifiable information, financial details, and more. This harvested information can be sold to third parties or exploited for profit.

What Are Fake Search Engines?

Fake search engines are deceptive websites that mimic the appearance and functionality of legitimate search engines but often operate with malicious intent. These fake search engines may be created to deceive users, redirect traffic, or compromise user privacy and security. Here are key characteristics and risks associated with fake search engines:

Deceptive Appearance:

Fake search engines often imitate the look and feel of popular and trustworthy search engines to trick users into using them. They may adopt similar logos, search boxes, and overall design to appear legitimate.

Unauthorized Browser Settings Changes:

Some fake search engines, particularly those associated with browser hijackers, make unauthorized changes to browser settings. This includes setting the fake search engine as the default homepage, search engine, or new tab page without the user's consent.

Unreliable Search Results:

Fake search engines typically provide unreliable or manipulated search results. Users may be presented with sponsored links, advertisements, or irrelevant content instead of accurate and relevant search results.

Redirection to Legitimate Search Engines:

In some cases, fake search engines redirect users to legitimate search engines, such as Google or Bing, after displaying their manipulated search results. This redirection is a deceptive tactic to maintain an appearance of legitimacy.
