What is Lilmoon Ransomware?
We discovered Lilmoon, a member of the VoidCrypt ransomware family, while analyzing malware samples submitted to VirusTotal. This ransomware encrypts data and renames files, adding the victim's ID, an email address (encrypt.ns@gmail.com), and the ".lilmoon" extension. For example, a file called "1.jpg" is renamed "1.jpg. (encrypt.ns@gmail.com).lilmoon".
Lilmoon also creates a ransom note in the form of a file called "Dectryption-guide.txt" that explains how the encryption works and instructs victims not to modify files or use any third-party recovery tools as this may result in lost data and key files. It gives two email addresses - encrypt.ns@gmail.com and decrypt.ns@gmail.com - for victims to contact with their case ID and a test file attached to prove that they are real owners of encrypted files in order to receive decryption instructions for restoring their data.
