Researchers spotted a new strain of file-encrypting malware in the wild. The new variant is named the Hhew ransomware, after the extension it appends to encrypted files.
Hhew belongs to the huge family of Djvu ransomware strains. New versions of Djvu source code appear every week, seemingly with no end to this.
The ransomware encrypts popular file types and makes them unreadable. The encrypted files receive a new extension, appended after their old one. A file called "waterfall.jpg" will transform into "waterfall.jpg.hhew" once it has been encrypted by the ransomware. Hhew will encrypt most media, document and archive file types.
The ransomware demand is for $490 in ransom payment within the first 72 hours after infection. That amount is increased twofold to $980 after this time frame. The ransom note is dropped in a plain text file named "_readme.txt".
