Fefg Ransomware
A new strain of ransomware based on Djvu ransomware code has been registered by researchers. The new variant is called the Fefg ransomware.
The malware does exactly what you would expect it to - it encrypts the majority of files on the victim system, leaving mostly system-essential files intact and scrambling documents, media and database files into an unreadable state.
The ransomware will append the ".fefg" extension past the original one on all files it encrypts. This means a file called "ledger.xlsx" will turn into "ledger.xlsx.fefg" once it has been fully encrypted.
The ransom note is dropped inside a "_readme.txt" plain text file, asking for the same amounts of cryptocurrency as the majority of recent Djvu clones. The ransom starts at $490 in the first 72 hours, then rises to $980. It bears repeating that there is no guarantee that victims will ever receive a working decryptor, even if they choose to pay up.
