The EMPg296LCK keeps things simple. The ransomware encrypts almost all non-essential files it discovered on the target system drives, including documents, media, and most archive and database formats. Once encryption completes, the ransomware appends a new extension to affected files - ".EMPg296LCK", hence the name of the malware.
The ransom note is dropped inside an HTML file named "!_HOW_RECOVERY_FILES_!.HTML" and is placed on the desktop. The full note reads as follows:
