How to Resize an Image on Mac

Need to make an image a bit smaller on your Mac, but have no idea how to do it? While it might be possible to do it through inconvenient image compression tools, there might be a much easier way to do this – simply resize the image on your Mac. You can do this in several ways by using Mac's built-in tools. Keep in mind that reducing the size of an image is a great way to make it smaller in size, but this option might not be applicable in all cases, especially if you are looking for extra effective compression. However, learning how to resize an image on Mac should be more than enough if you simply want to be able to share smaller image on social media sites and networks.

How to Resize an Image on Mac through the Preview App

The first way to do it is to use the Preview app found on all modern Macs. Start by using Finder to navigate to the image you want to work with. Open the file – by default, Mac will use the Preview app to do so. Next, select Tools -> Adjust Size from the top bar, and select the new size dimensions you want to use. Make sure that the Scale Proportionally option is enabled – this will prevent you from meddling with the image's aspect ratio, which could ruin its quality.

If some parts of your image are not important and you can dispose of them, then there is one more way to use the Preview app to reduce its size. Once the image is open, go to Tools -> Crop. This will allow you to save a specific part of the image and cut out the rest.

How to Compress an Image on Mac through the Preview App

If resizing does not do enough for you, then you might also want to try using the Preview app to modify the compression that the image uses. Use the instructions from the above step to load the image in Preview. Then, go to Tools -> Adjust Size and play around with the Fit Into option. It will resize and crop your image to fit the correct size.

Next, go to File -> Export and select a different output format for the image. For example, you can use PNG for Web-based graphics – this will preserve colors and quality with minimum loss of quality. You can also try out JPEG – it might work better in some situations.
