Fetchzilla Rogue Browser Extension

Fetchzilla is a browser extension of the adware variety, which our researchers stumbled upon during an investigation into suspicious websites. It's marketed as a tool to simplify the downloading of media, like images, from the internet. However, instead of delivering on this promise, Fetchzilla inundates users with bothersome and misleading advertisements.

Adware, short for advertising-supported software, is crafted to conduct intrusive advertising campaigns. This type of software displays ads on websites you visit and other interfaces.

The graphical content offered by third parties through Fetchzilla primarily promotes online scams, dubious or harmful software, and, in some cases, even malware. Clicking on certain ads can trigger scripts to initiate downloads or installations without obtaining the user's consent.

It's important to note that while legitimate content may occasionally appear through these ads, it's highly unlikely that any official entities endorse such content in this manner. More than likely, these promotions are orchestrated by scammers exploiting product affiliate programs to gain unauthorized commissions.

Adware typically requires specific conditions to launch intrusive ad campaigns, such as compatibility with particular browsers or system specifications and visits to specific websites. Nevertheless, even if the Fetchzilla browser extension doesn't display ads, its mere presence poses a threat to the safety of the device and the user.

Furthermore, Fetchzilla engages in the collection of sensitive information, including visited URLs, viewed web pages, search queries, internet cookies, login credentials for accounts, financial information, and more. This harvested data can then be sold to third parties or otherwise exploited for financial gain.

What Are Rogue Browser Extensions?

Rogue browser extensions, also known as potentially unwanted browser extensions or add-ons, are software components that can be added to web browsers like Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. However, these extensions are designed with malicious intent, often engaging in harmful activities without the user's knowledge or consent. Here are some key characteristics of rogue browser extensions:

  • Malicious Intent: Rogue browser extensions are created with the primary goal of carrying out malicious activities, such as stealing sensitive user data, delivering intrusive advertisements, redirecting web traffic, or spreading malware.
  • Deceptive Appearance: They may disguise themselves as legitimate or useful extensions to trick users into installing them. These extensions often have names and icons that resemble popular and trusted browser add-ons.
  • Unauthorized Behavior: Rogue extensions typically perform actions that users did not consent to or are not aware of. This could include changing browser settings, injecting ads into web pages, or collecting personal information without permission.
  • Privacy Concerns: Many rogue extensions compromise user privacy by tracking their online activities, including web browsing habits, search queries, and login credentials. This data may then be used for various malicious purposes, such as identity theft or targeted advertising.
  • Security Risks: Some rogue extensions can expose users to security risks by downloading and installing malware on their devices, opening backdoors for cybercriminals, or engaging in other activities that compromise system security.
  • Unauthorized Access: In some cases, rogue extensions gain unauthorized access to a user's browser, allowing them to manipulate web pages, inject malicious scripts, or perform actions that can harm the user or their online experience.
