Beware of the 'Renewing The Domain' Scam
There is a new phishing scam being distributed online through malspam emails. The name given to this latest attempt to scam users is the "Renewing the domain" scam.
The concept of the scam is fairly simple. The scammers use one of the common methods to phish out victim information - a scam revolving around a fake email disruption. The victims are told they need to take action to avoid potential issues related to their email. The text of the scam email goes as follows:
This is to notify you that we will be renewing the domain ******** on [date here], your email address will be unavailable at approximately 8am for a few hours. Also, the drive is running low on space and we will copy the shared files to another larger drive.
To avoid any interruption in your email services and data loss (emails, documents, contacts and others) during the transfer of shared files to a larger disk.
It is important that you backup your data now before the domain renewal period using the following
Backup Email Now
Clicking the "Backup Email Now" button will take the victim to a phishing portal set up by the scammers. The form is simply labeled "Email Portal" and expects victims to enter their email passwords. Of course, doing this will only hand the password over to the hackers running the scam and will lead to the loss of access and takeover of your email account.
Be very careful with unsolicited emails inside your inbox and never click suspicious links, much less enter any sensitive information on pages they open.
