Beware of the 'Norton LifeLock' Scam
There is yet another scam making the rounds online. As usual, this new scam is being distributed using malicious spam emails.
The scam abuses the names of legitimate entities, this time NortonLifeLock and PayPal. It should be noted that the legitimate entity is called "NortonLifeLock", while the scam spells the name with a space between the words.
The email claims it is an invoice from PayPal, sent for a payment the scam victim allegedly made for a subscription to a "Family Security" product by Norton LifeLock. The juicy sum of $450 is intended to get victims scared and confused because they never made any such purchase in the first place.
The scam email lists two phone numbers - one allegedly belonging to PayPal support and the other - used to cancel the fake subscription. This is a classic "support scam" setup, where victims are urged to call live malicious operators. Once the victim dials the number, the possibilities are endless. They can be calling a phone number that will rack up insane phone bills, they could be asked to install a remote access tool by the malicious operators on the other end of the line, and the list goes on.
Be very careful with unsolicited emails that end up in your inbox and think twice before you take action.
