Beware! Malware Hides in Minecraft Modpacks
Cybersecurity experts are advising Minecraft players to refrain from downloading any new mods or plugins while they work on resolving a malware issue that has infiltrated the game.
The malware, known as "fracturizer," has been discovered within popular Minecraft modpacks. These modpacks combine various game themes and enable players to switch between multiple mods, offering a wider range of experiences. Unfortunately, this functionality also aids in the propagation of the malware.
The fracturizer GitHub repository describes the malware as highly dangerous and warns that any infected device should be considered entirely compromised by the malicious actors responsible for the virus.
Researchers on GitHub found evidence of the malicious files dating back to April, as well as some files dating as far back as 1999. This peculiar aspect related to CurseForge, the platform used for mod hosting, caught their attention.
CurseForge, in a statement posted on the fracturizer GitHub page on June 7, assured users that its platform remains uncompromised. They have taken action by suspending accounts associated with the malware and are actively working on a solution.
GitHub also reported the suspension of a command-and-control server connected to fracturizer by its hosting provider.
Minecraft mod players concerned about potential exposure to fracturizer can consult specific instructions on GitHub to identify signs of compromise and take necessary steps for mitigation.
The researchers behind the fracturizer GitHub project emphasized exercising extreme caution since the full capabilities and intentions of the malware remain unknown.
