U.S. Cracks Down on Russian Disinformation with Seizure of 32 Propaganda Domains Ahead of 2024 Election
In a bold move to counter pro-Russian propaganda efforts, the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) has seized 32 domains tied to a disinformation operation named Doppelganger. These websites were part of a larger Russian influence campaign aimed at undermining global support for Ukraine and manipulating voters in the U.S., including during the 2024 Presidential Election.

Russian Propaganda Machine Exposed
The U.S. government identified several Russian companies, including the Social Design Agency (SDA), Structura National Technology (Structura), and ANO Dialog, for their involvement in orchestrating this malicious operation. These entities, working under the Kremlin's direction, spread fabricated stories and disinformation to disrupt political stability and influence foreign elections.
The domains seized in this operation included websites that mimicked legitimate news outlets such as Fox News, The Washington Post, Le Monde, and Der Spiegel. Some of the counterfeit sites included:
- tribunalukraine.info
- spiegel.agency
- fox-news.top
- washingtonpost.pm
These domains were weaponized to push Kremlin-backed narratives, aiming to bolster pro-Russian policies and sow discord in countries supporting Ukraine.
A Deeper Dive into the Doppelganger Operation
The U.S. government’s crackdown extends beyond just shutting down these domains. The Treasury Department sanctioned 10 individuals and two entities for their role in undermining electoral integrity in the U.S. Specifically, Russian state-funded media outlet RT covertly enlisted American influencers and concealed its involvement through front companies, pushing disinformation disguised as legitimate commentary.
Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco emphasized how these disinformation campaigns were driven by AI-generated content targeting specific American demographics. "At Putin's direction, Russian companies SDA, Structura, and ANO Dialog used cybersquatting and fake profiles to covertly promote false narratives on social media," Monaco said.
Russian Agents Indicted
Two RT employees, Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva, were charged with conspiring to violate U.S. laws by funneling nearly $10 million into a Tennessee-based content firm to create thousands of videos spreading Kremlin propaganda. The videos, which focused on divisive issues like immigration and inflation, accumulated millions of views on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
The DoJ revealed that these videos were crafted to deepen societal divisions in the U.S., often amplifying domestic conflicts to destabilize public trust in the electoral process. The individuals involved now face hefty charges, including conspiracy to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) and money laundering.
Broader U.S. Efforts to Combat Disinformation
The U.S. is taking additional steps to clamp down on Russian influence operations. The State Department has issued restrictions on visa issuance for individuals working on behalf of Kremlin-aligned media outlets. Additionally, prominent Russian media companies like Rossiya Segodnya, RT, and Sputnik have been designated as foreign missions, requiring them to disclose personnel and property within the U.S.
A Global Fight Against Disinformation
The U.S. government’s actions underscore the growing threat of state-sponsored disinformation campaigns, especially with the 2024 U.S. elections approaching. This crackdown on Russian-backed propaganda comes at a time when other foreign powers, including China, are also ramping up disinformation efforts. The Chinese campaign, known as Spamouflage, has similarly deployed fake personas on social media to influence public opinion on sensitive issues.
The Road Ahead
The U.S. government's aggressive response sends a clear message that foreign meddling in American elections and global political affairs will not be tolerated. As online disinformation campaigns become more sophisticated, the need for vigilance and decisive action has never been greater. With both Russian and Chinese operations in the spotlight, the fight to preserve democratic integrity is far from over.
