SystemSmarter Mac Adware

During our analysis of new file submissions, we came across a deceptive application called SystemSmarter. Our examination revealed that this app is categorized as adware and belongs to the AdLoad family of adware clones.

Adware, short for advertising-supported software, operates by inundating users with undesirable and deceitful advertisements. These third-party graphical contents, such as pop-ups, coupons, overlays, and banners, are displayed on websites visited by users and various interfaces.

The advertisements delivered by adware primarily promote online scams, untrustworthy or harmful software, and potential malware. Some of these ads may execute scripts upon being clicked, leading to unauthorized downloads or installations without user consent.

It is essential to note that while legitimate products or services may occasionally appear in these ads, they are not endorsed by their developers or official providers. Most often, these endorsements are carried out by scammers who exploit affiliate programs to gain illegitimate commissions.

Ad-supported software might refrain from running intrusive advertising campaigns if certain conditions are unsuitable, such as incompatible browsers or systems or if specific sites are not visited. Nonetheless, the presence of the SystemSmarter app on a system still poses a threat.

While AdLoad applications commonly include browser-hijacking functionalities, we observed that SystemSmarter did not exhibit such abilities during our testing.

Adware typically collects sensitive user information, and this could apply to SystemSmarter as well. The targeted data may include visited URLs, viewed webpages, search queries, Internet cookies, account login credentials, identifiable information, credit card numbers, and more. The collected information can be monetized through sale to third parties.

What is Adware and Why Should You Steer Clear of It?

Adware, short for advertising-supported software, is a type of software that displays advertisements on a user's device, such as a computer or mobile phone, while the user is browsing the internet or using certain applications. The primary purpose of adware is to generate revenue for its creators by delivering targeted advertisements to users based on their browsing habits and preferences.

While some forms of adware may be legitimate and display non-intrusive ads, many adware programs are designed to be intrusive and deceptive. They may flood the user's screen with pop-up ads, banners, coupons, or overlays that disrupt the browsing experience and can be difficult to close or remove. In some cases, adware may even modify the user's browser settings or redirect them to unwanted websites.

Here are some reasons why you should steer clear of adware:

  • Intrusive and Annoying: Adware can be highly intrusive, bombarding users with unwanted ads that disrupt their browsing experience and make it difficult to focus on the content they want to access.
  • Privacy Concerns: Adware often collects user data, including browsing habits, search queries, and personal information. This data can be used for targeted advertising but may also be sold to third parties without the user's consent, raising privacy concerns.
  • Security Risks: Some adware can pose security risks, as it may be bundled with or serve as a gateway for more malicious software, such as spyware, Trojans, or ransomware. Clicking on certain ads or interacting with adware can lead to unintended downloads of harmful software.
  • Reduced Performance: Adware can consume system resources, leading to slower device performance and reduced battery life on mobile devices.
  • Unwanted Content: Adware may deliver inappropriate or unsafe content, exposing users to scams, phishing attempts, or adult content, which can be especially concerning for families with young children.
  • Deceptive Practices: Adware may use deceptive tactics to trick users into clicking on ads, such as disguising ads as legitimate system notifications or security alerts.
