Remove Surtr Ransomware

Surtr Ransomware is a file-locker, which can damage your files permanently. Its attack lasts just a few minutes, but this is all the time that the Surtr Ransomware needs to render your files inaccessible. It is able to lock a wide range of file types – documents, images, archives, videos, and other media. All of the locked files will have their names modified by adding the suffix '.[DecryptMyData@mailfence.com].SURT.'

How is the Surtr Ransomware Spread?

Users may come across malware like this one because they visit low-quality sites. However, you should know that the criminals behind these projects might rely on other malware propagation tricks too. It is not uncommon for them to approach victims via spearphishng emails, which contain a dangerous attachment. Fake downloads and deceptive ads are other popular tricks that ransomware creators may rely on.

How Does the Surtr Ransomware Damage Files?

The damage is done by encrypting the contents of these files by using a unique key. The latter key is required to complete the decryption task. However, the Surtr Ransomware sends it to the server of its creators, ensuring that victims will be unable to recover it.

In addition to encrypting files and modifying their names, the threat also drops two ransom message – SUIRTR_README.txt and SURTR_README.hta.

According to the message, victims can pay for a decryptor. The price is not mentioned and, instead, the crooks ask their victim to send a message to decryptmydata@mailfence.com or decrypter@msgsafe.io for additional information.   If the Surtr Ransomware has taken over your data, we advise you not to trust the criminals. Paying them is a risky move, which could get you scammed. Our advice is to use an anti-malware scanner to eliminate the file-locker. After the threat is gone, use reputable data recovery tools and techniques.
