SmartCharacter Mac Adware
During an examination of new file samples, our researchers came across the SmartCharacter application, categorized as adware and belonging to the AdLoad malware family. This app is specifically crafted to inundate users with unwanted and potentially harmful advertisements.
Adware facilitates the display of third-party graphical content, such as pop-ups, banners, coupons, overlays, etc., on visited websites or other interfaces. These ads predominantly promote online scams, untrustworthy or harmful software, and even malware. Clicking on some of these ads may trigger the execution of scripts for covert downloads or installations.
It's important to note that although legitimate content might occasionally appear through these advertisements, official parties are unlikely to endorse it in this manner. More often, this type of promotion is conducted by scammers exploiting affiliate programs to gain illegitimate commissions.
Advertising-supported software may require specific conditions to execute intrusive ad campaigns, such as compatible browser/system specifications, user geolocation, visits to particular sites, etc. Regardless of whether SmartCharacter displays advertisements, it poses a threat to device integrity and user privacy.
While AdLoad apps typically possess browser-hijacking functionalities, our analysis of SmartCharacter did not reveal such qualities.
Adware commonly includes data-tracking capabilities, and this may extend to the SmartCharacter application. The information of interest may encompass visited URLs, viewed pages, search queries, internet cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, financial data, and more. The collected information can then be shared with or sold to third parties.
