What is SharedKey Mac Adware?

Mac OS

During our analysis of newly discovered files, our research team came across the SharedKey application, which has been identified as rogue software functioning as adware. This particular program belongs to the AdLoad malware family.

Adware refers to software that is supported by advertising. Its main purpose is to conduct aggressive advertising campaigns by displaying advertisements on various interfaces. These ads often promote online scams, untrustworthy or harmful software, and even malware. Some intrusive ads may initiate stealthy downloads or installations when clicked.

It is important to note that any legitimate content encountered through these advertisements is most likely being promoted by scammers who exploit affiliate programs to gain unauthorized commissions.

Advertising-supported software typically requires certain conditions to deliver intrusive ad campaigns, such as compatible browser or system specifications or visits to specific websites. However, even if SharedKey doesn't display ads, its presence on a system still poses a risk to the safety of the device and the user.

Although we did not observe any browser hijacker characteristics during our testing of SharedKey, it should be acknowledged that this rogue application likely incorporates data-tracking capabilities.

The targeted information that may be collected includes browsing and search engine histories, internet cookies, account login credentials (usernames and passwords), personally identifiable information, credit card numbers, and more. The gathered data can be monetized through sale to third parties, potentially including cybercriminals.

How Can Adware End Up on Your Mac?

Adware can find its way onto your Mac through various means. Here are some common ways adware can end up on your Mac:

  • Freeware and Shareware Downloads: Adware often comes bundled with free software or shareware applications that you download from the internet. When installing these programs, if you choose the default or quick installation option without carefully reviewing the installation process, you may inadvertently install additional adware along with the desired software.
  • Fake Software Updates: Adware distributors may deceive users by presenting fake software update alerts or notifications. These notifications may appear legitimate, resembling system or application update prompts. If you click on such notifications and proceed with the update process, you may unknowingly download and install adware onto your Mac.
  • Malicious Websites and Downloads: Visiting malicious websites or downloading files from untrustworthy sources can expose your Mac to adware. Some websites may use deceptive tactics to trick users into downloading and installing adware or clicking on misleading ads that initiate adware installations.
  • Phishing Emails and Malicious Attachments: Adware can be distributed through phishing emails that aim to deceive you into opening malicious attachments or clicking on malicious links. These attachments or links may lead to the installation of adware on your Mac.
  • Fake Flash Player Installers: Adware distributors sometimes disguise adware as legitimate Adobe Flash Player installers. If you download and run these fake installers, thinking that you need to update your Flash Player, you may unknowingly install adware instead.
  • Vulnerabilities in Software or Operating System: Adware can exploit vulnerabilities in software or the operating system of your Mac to gain unauthorized access. It is crucial to keep your Mac and software applications up to date with the latest security patches to minimize the risk of adware infiltration through known vulnerabilities.

To protect your Mac from adware, practice safe browsing habits, be cautious when downloading and installing software, only download from trusted sources, and carefully review the installation process for any bundled or additional software. Additionally, keep your Mac's security settings enabled, use reputable antivirus software, and regularly scan your system for potential threats.
