Read-the-notification.com Uses Fake Video as Bait

Read-the-notification.com operates as a deceptive website that engages in the distribution of browser notification spam and redirects users to potentially suspicious or malicious websites.

The majority of individuals who come across this website, as well as similar ones, are typically redirected to them through links generated by websites utilizing untrustworthy advertising networks. During our investigation of websites employing such networks, we came across read-the-notification.com.

It is important to note that the content promoted on rogue websites like this can differ based on the visitor's IP address or geolocation. When we visited read-the-notification.com, we encountered several pop-up windows.

The background page displayed a fabricated video player, accompanied by text instructing users to "Press 'Allow' to watch the video." Positioned on top of the player was a pop-up message stating, "Your Video Is Ready/ Press Play to start the video/ Cancel/ PLAY."

Another window urged users to "CLICK ALLOW TO CLOSE THIS PAGE/ OK," while the pop-up beneath this one appeared mostly blank, featuring only the phrase "More info."

If a visitor is deceived into clicking the "Allow" button, they unknowingly grant read-the-notification.com permission to deliver browser notifications. These notifications primarily consist of advertisements that promote various scams, unreliable or harmful software, and even malware.

Why Should You Avoid Clicking 'Allow' on Unfamiliar Pages?

It is crucial to avoid clicking 'Allow' on unfamiliar pages due to several important reasons:

Unwanted browser notifications: Clicking 'Allow' grants the website permission to send you browser notifications. Once enabled, you may start receiving a barrage of intrusive and unwanted notifications, often containing spam, advertisements, scams, or potentially malicious content. These notifications can disrupt your browsing experience and compromise your online privacy.

Increased risk of malware and scams: By granting permission to display notifications, you expose yourself to potential malware infections and scams. Some malicious websites may exploit browser notifications to deliver harmful software or deceive you into downloading malicious files. Additionally, scammers may use notifications to present fraudulent offers or phishing attempts, attempting to trick you into divulging personal information or financial details.

Loss of control over your browsing experience: Allowing notifications from unfamiliar websites means relinquishing control over your browser experience. You may constantly receive interruptions and distractions, making it challenging to focus on your intended activities. Moreover, managing and disabling these unwanted notifications can be time-consuming and cumbersome.

Privacy concerns: Notifications from unfamiliar websites may collect and track your browsing behavior, gathering personal information about your online habits and interests. This data can be used for targeted advertising or potentially shared with third parties without your knowledge or consent, compromising your privacy.
