OriginalConnection Mac Adware
During our analysis of recent file submissions, our team made an interesting discovery: the OriginalConnection application. This particular software operates as adware and belongs to the AdLoad malware family.
Adware, short for advertising-supported software, is designed to generate revenue for developers by delivering intrusive advertising campaigns. These ads appear on visited webpages or other interfaces, interrupting the user experience.
The graphical content provided by this adware primarily promotes online scams, untrustworthy or hazardous software, and even malware. Clicking on some of these advertisements can trigger stealthy downloads or installations without the user's knowledge or consent.
It is important to note that legitimate products or services are unlikely to be endorsed through such advertisements by official parties. Instead, these promotions are often carried out by scammers who exploit affiliate programs to earn illegitimate commissions.
Advertising-supported software typically requires specific conditions to run intrusive ad campaigns, such as a compatible browser or system, user geolocation, or visits to specific websites. However, even if the OriginalConnection app doesn't display ads, its presence on a system still poses a threat.
Although our examination of the OriginalConnection app did not reveal any browser hijacker capabilities commonly associated with AdLoad adware, it is worth mentioning that this rogue application likely collects sensitive information. The targeted data may include browsing and search engine histories, internet cookies, usernames and passwords, personally identifiable information, financial details, and more. This collected data can then be shared with or sold to third parties.
