LookupSystem is an application that our researchers recently came across while investigating new submissions to the VirusTotal website. Upon closer examination, it was determined that LookupSystem belongs to the AdLoad malware family and is classified as adware. Adware, short for advertising-supported software, is notorious for its intrusive advertisement campaigns and potentially harmful capabilities.

Adware, such as LookupSystem, functions by displaying advertisements across various interfaces. These ads can appear under specific conditions, which may include having a compatible browser or system, visiting particular websites, or other triggering events. However, it's crucial to note that the mere presence of LookupSystem on a system poses a significant threat to both device and user safety.

The Dangers of Adware: LookupSystem's Intrusive Advertisements

Adware-generated advertisements often promote online scams, untrustworthy or hazardous software, and, in some cases, even deliver malware. Some of these ads can execute scripts that trigger stealthy downloads or installations when clicked. Additionally, it's worth mentioning that any legitimate content encountered through these ads is likely being promoted by scammers who exploit affiliate programs to gain illegitimate commissions.

While some adware applications, like AdLoad, commonly exhibit browser-hijacking traits, our analysis did not identify these characteristics in LookupSystem. However, it is highly probable that this adware possesses data-tracking capabilities. This means it can potentially collect a wide range of sensitive information, including visited URLs, viewed pages, search queries, Internet cookies, login credentials (such as usernames and passwords), personally identifiable details, and even credit card numbers. This data can then be sold to third parties or exploited for profit in various malicious ways.

In summary, advertising-supported software like LookupSystem can lead to system infections, severe privacy breaches, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Now, you might be wondering how LookupSystem ended up on your computer. Adware often infiltrates systems through bundled installations. This means it is packaged alongside legitimate software, increasing the risk of its presence on your device. Users inadvertently allow bundled content onto their systems when they download software from dubious sources, such as freeware and third-party websites, or engage in peer-to-peer (P2P) sharing networks. Rushing through installation processes, such as ignoring terms, skipping steps, and opting for "Easy" or "Express" settings, also heightens the risk of adware installation.

Moreover, adware may have "official" download pages and can be endorsed on scam websites. Users typically access these pages via redirects triggered by rogue advertising networks, mistyped URLs, spam browser notifications, intrusive ads, or even previously installed adware that has the capability to force-open browsers.

Preventing Adware Infections: Safeguarding Your System and Data

To prevent the installation of adware and similar threats, we strongly recommend conducting thorough research on software and downloading it exclusively from official and verified sources. When installing software, exercise caution by carefully reading the terms and examining all available options, using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings, and opting out of any supplementary apps, extensions, tools, or other bundled content.

Additionally, exercise vigilance while browsing the internet, as fake and dangerous online content often appears deceptively legitimate. Intrusive ads may seem harmless but can redirect you to unreliable and questionable websites, such as those promoting scams, gambling, pornography, or adult dating.

If you find yourself continuously encountering suspicious ads or redirects, it's essential to check your device and promptly remove any questionable applications, browser extensions, or plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with LookupSystem or similar adware, we recommend running a scan with a reputable anti-malware application to remove the threat and protect your system's integrity and your personal data.
