KUKANOS Ransomware Tries to Keep Files Out of Reach

Ransomware is a popular cyberattack that is capable of seizing on your computer and taking all of the data. The hacker encrypts all of the data and then will release it for you if they receive payment. This type of attack can be devastating as personal information such as medical records, bank account records, social media profiles, and more could be taken by this hacker out of thin air. They then say that they will release it for you, but they want money - often in Bitcoin or another type of cryptocurrency.

The ZEPPELIN Ransomware family has not been that active over the past couple of months, but a new variant was just discovered - the KUKANOS Ransomware. It uses the same file-locking mechanism as the original project and, unfortunately. This means that it is impossible to recover the damaged data for free.

KUKANOS Ransomware's Attack & Consequences

When the KUKANOS Ransomware infects a machine, it will execute a background task whose purpose is to do the following:

  • Encrypt files.
  • Rename encrypted files by adding the extension '.@KUKANOSSOSANOS.[<VICTIM ID>].'
  • Drop the ransom message '!!! ALL YOUR FILES ARE ENCRYPTED !!!.TXT.'
  • Delete System Restore information and Shadow Volume Copies.

The criminals behind the KUKANOS attack ask for a ransom payment. You should not co-operate with them in any way. You might get scammed out of your money. Unfortunately, once your data is encrypted by the KUKANOS Ransomware, the only way to recover it is through a backup. The best way to recover from an attack like this is to make sure you have a good backup system in place. The best way to avoid this type of problem altogether is by using offline backups. This can be done by creating an external hard drive that does not have any connection to the internet and uses it as your primary repository for all of your files. This will ensure that you are safe from ransomware attacks because they cannot get into your offline storage system and encrypt all of your data - they are inaccessible thanks to their lack of internet access.
