Kruu Ransomware
Kruu ransomware is a newly discovered strain of file-encrypting malware. The new ransomware variant is the latest member of the ever-growing Djvu ransomware family.
The ransomware works as expected, without any big surprises. It encrypts popular file types including the most commonly used media, document and database formats. Once files are encrypted, they get the extension ".kruu" appended after their original one. In effect, this means that a file named "ledger.xlsx" will turn into "ledger.xlsx.kruu" once it has been encrypted by the ransomware.
The ransom note is dropped inside a plain text file called "_readme.txt", as is customary for almost all Djvu variants. The ransomware uses a little social engineering trick, offering a "discount" to the ransom payment if it's made within the first 72 hours after the encryption. The ransom gets a twofold hike up from $490 to $980 if payment is attempted after this timeframe.
Of course, there is no guarantee that the victim will ever receive a working decryption tool even if they pay up, even though the hackers offer to decrypt a single file "for free", as proof they have a working decryptor.
