Kiwm Ransomware is a Djvu Variant Loaded With File Encryption Methods

During the examination of malware samples, we discovered a new type of malware called Kiwm, which belongs to the Djvu ransomware family. Kiwm encrypts files on the infected system and adds a ".kiwm" extension to their filenames. The malware then leaves a ransom note named "_readme.txt" in the encrypted folders.

For instance, if a file named "1.jpg" is encrypted, Kiwm will alter its name to "1.jpg.kiwm". Kiwm may also be distributed in conjunction with information-stealing malware such as Vidar and RedLine.

The ransom note provides victims with instructions on how to recover their files, as well as contact and payment details. To initiate the data recovery process, victims are instructed to contact the attackers via email at support@freshmail.top or datarestorehelp@airmail.cc.

The ransom note warns that victims must contact the attackers within 72 hours, or the decryption software and key price will increase from $490 to $980. Additionally, the attackers offer to decrypt a single file for free to demonstrate the legitimacy of their decryption tools.

How Can Malware Like Kiwm Get on Your System?

Malware like Kiwm can get onto your system in a number of ways. Some of the most common methods of infection are:

Phishing emails: Attackers often use phishing emails to trick users into clicking on a malicious link or downloading an infected attachment. The email may appear to be from a legitimate source, such as a bank or a well-known company, but the link or attachment will actually download and install the malware on the user's system.

Software vulnerabilities: Outdated software and operating systems can have security vulnerabilities that attackers can exploit to install malware. It's important to keep all software up-to-date with the latest security patches to minimize the risk of infection.

Malicious downloads: Malicious software can be disguised as legitimate software downloads or updates. For example, a user may think they are downloading a legitimate software update, but the download actually contains malware.

Drive-by downloads: These occur when a user visits a website that is infected with malware. The malware automatically downloads and installs onto the user's system without their knowledge or consent.

To protect against malware like Kiwm, it's important to use anti-malware software and keep it up-to-date. It's also crucial to avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading attachments from unknown sources. Additionally, keeping all software up-to-date with the latest security patches can help prevent vulnerabilities that attackers can exploit.
