Karsovrop Ransomware Demands Bitcoin Ransom

ransomware

Karsovrop, a type of ransomware, is a malicious program that encrypts data and demands ransom payments for decryption. Our research team encountered Karsovrop while going over newly discovered malicious file samples.

This ransomware encrypts files and modifies their filenames on our testing system. For instance, a file originally labeled "1.jpg" becomes "1.jpg.karsovrop," and "2.png" transforms into "2.png.karsovrop." Subsequently, a ransom-requesting message titled "FILE RECOVERY.txt" is generated.

Karsovrop's ransom note contains decryption instructions, specifying that the victim must pay a ransom in Bitcoin cryptocurrency for data recovery. The ransom amount depends on how quickly the victim establishes contact.

Prior to meeting the ransom demands, a complimentary decryption test is offered. The victim can send the attackers a single encrypted file, not exceeding 1MB in size (non-archived), and without containing valuable information (e.g., databases, backups, large Excel sheets, etc.).

The message concludes with warnings against actions that could render the files undecryptable or result in increased financial loss.
