Iicc Ransomware is Another Djvu Clone

ransomware

Our team has identified a new variant of Djvu ransomware known as Iicc. Our analysis revealed that Iicc follows the typical ransomware pattern: it encrypts files, alters filenames by appending the ".iicc" extension, and includes a ransom note named "_readme.txt."

To illustrate how Iicc modifies filenames, it transforms "1.jpg" into "1.jpg.iicc," "2.png" into "2.png.iicc," and so on. Given its affiliation with the Djvu family, there is a significant likelihood that cybercriminals are distributing Iicc alongside other threats like RedLine, Vidar, or another information-stealing malware.

The ransom note provides victims with information that their essential files are encrypted and can only be restored by purchasing a decryption tool along with a unique key, priced at $980. A 50% discount is offered if victims reach out to the threat actors within 72 hours. The attackers assure free decryption of one file, provided it does not contain valuable information.

Victims are directed to contact the cybercriminals via email at support@freshmail.top or datarestorehelp@airmail.cc, including a personal ID in their communication. The note underscores that data restoration is not possible without making the specified payment.

How Can Ransomware Infect Your System?

Ransomware can infect your system through various methods, and attackers are constantly evolving their techniques. Here are some common ways ransomware can infiltrate a system:

  • Phishing Emails: One of the most common methods is through phishing emails. Attackers send seemingly legitimate emails with malicious attachments or links. If the user opens the attachment or clicks on the link, the ransomware is executed, and it begins encrypting files on the system.
  • Malicious Websites: Visiting compromised or malicious websites can expose your system to ransomware. Some websites may contain exploit kits that take advantage of vulnerabilities in your browser or plugins to download and execute ransomware.
  • Malvertising: Cybercriminals can inject malicious code into online advertisements. When users click on these ads, they might unknowingly download ransomware onto their systems. This is known as malvertising (malicious advertising).
  • Drive-By Downloads: Ransomware can be delivered through drive-by downloads, where malware is downloaded and installed on a user's device without their knowledge or consent. This often occurs when visiting compromised websites.
  • Exploiting Software Vulnerabilities: Ransomware can exploit vulnerabilities in software or operating systems. If your software is not up-to-date with the latest security patches, it may be susceptible to exploitation by ransomware.
