Gash Ransomware Uses Ransom Note Similar to Djvu

The discovery of the Gash ransomware was made by our team during a routine inspection of new malware samples. This harmful program belongs to the Djvu ransomware family.

After testing the Gash ransomware on our machine, we discovered that it encrypted files and added the extension ".gash" to their original file names. For example, if a file was initially named "1.jpg", it would appear as "1.jpg.gash" after encryption, and the same would apply to all other affected files.

Once the encryption process was complete, Gash created a ransom note named "_readme.txt". It is important to note that similar to other Djvu ransomware, this malware is often accompanied by data stealers such as RedLine and Vidar.

The ransom note left by Gash informs the victim that their data has been encrypted, and the only way to recover it is by purchasing the decryption keys and software from the attackers. The cost of the tools is listed as 980 USD, with a 50% discount offered if payment is made within 72 hours (490 USD). The victim is also offered a free test decryption of a single file that is of no significant value.

How Can Ransomware Like Gash Get on Your System?

Ransomware like Gash can infect a system through various means, including:

  • Phishing emails: Attackers may use phishing emails that appear legitimate to trick the user into clicking a link or downloading an attachment containing the ransomware.
  • Malicious websites: Visiting a compromised website or downloading software from an untrustworthy source can lead to the installation of ransomware.
  • Exploiting vulnerabilities: Hackers may exploit security vulnerabilities in outdated software, operating systems, or other applications to deliver the ransomware.
  • Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) attacks: Cybercriminals can use brute-force attacks to guess weak passwords and gain unauthorized access to a network or system through RDP.
  • Malvertising: Malicious advertisements or banners on websites can redirect users to a site that automatically downloads ransomware onto their computer.

It is essential to keep systems and software updated with the latest security patches, use antivirus software, and practice safe browsing habits to minimize the risk of ransomware infections. Additionally, it is advisable to have a data backup plan in place to restore files in case of a ransomware attack.
