Foryoupromo.com Uses Misleading Giveaway to Push Ads

ads adware

During our investigation of suspicious websites, our researchers came across the foryoupromo.com rogue page. This website is specifically designed to promote scams and fill users' browsers with notification spam. Additionally, it has the capability to redirect users to other potentially untrustworthy or malicious sites.

Most visitors to foryoupromo.com and similar pages typically arrive through redirects initiated by webpages utilizing rogue advertising networks.

The behavior of rogue websites can vary depending on the geographical location of the visitor, as indicated by their IP address. This means that the content encountered on these sites may be tailored accordingly.

At the time of our research, foryoupromo.com was running a phishing scam targeting email addresses and other sensitive information. The scam enticed users by falsely claiming that they could test and keep Apple Airpod Max headphones. To participate, users were instructed to provide their email address, ZIP code, and potentially additional data (during our testing, the dialog box stopped responding at that point).

Scams that aim to obtain email addresses often intend to use them for sending spam messages. These deceptive emails serve as a vehicle for a wide range of scams, including phishing, sextortion, tech support scams, inheritance scams, lottery scams, and the dissemination of malware.

Moreover, foryoupromo.com requested permission to send browser notifications. If granted, the website would bombard users with ads promoting online scams, unreliable or harmful software, and even malware.

How Can You Tell a Promotion or Giveaway is Fake or a Scam?

Identifying fake promotions or giveaways can be crucial in protecting yourself from scams. Here are some signs to watch out for that can help you determine if a promotion or giveaway is fake or a scam:

  • Unrealistic offers: If the offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be cautious of promotions or giveaways that promise extravagant prizes or benefits with minimal effort or participation.
  • Poorly designed or unprofessional websites: Legitimate promotions or giveaways are often associated with reputable brands or organizations and have well-designed websites. If the website looks amateurish, has spelling or grammatical errors, or lacks essential information, it may be a red flag.
  • Request for personal information: Be wary if the promotion requires you to provide excessive personal information, such as your full name, address, social security number, or bank details. Legitimate promotions usually ask for minimal information necessary to contact the winners.
  • Upfront payments or fees: Legitimate promotions or giveaways do not require you to make any payments or pay fees to participate or claim your prize. If you are asked to send money, purchase products, or provide financial information upfront, it is likely a scam.
  • Pressure tactics or urgency: Scammers often create a sense of urgency or pressure to make you act quickly without thinking. They may use phrases like "limited time offer" or "act now" to push you into making hasty decisions. Legitimate promotions generally provide a reasonable timeframe for participation.
  • Unsolicited communication: If you receive an unexpected email, text message, or phone call claiming that you have won a promotion or giveaway you never entered, be cautious. Scammers often initiate contact through unsolicited means to lure victims into their scams.
