Extreme Security Adblocker

ads adware popup

While examining misleading websites, our investigators came across Extreme Security Adblocker, a browser extension that is marketed as a security-focused ad-blocking tool.

Upon closer examination, it was determined that this software is, in fact, adware. Contrary to its advertised purpose of removing advertisements, it does the opposite by displaying them. Additionally, the extension engages in monitoring users' browsing activities.

Adware, short for advertising-supported software, is designed to conduct intrusive advertising campaigns. This type of software facilitates the insertion of third-party graphical content, such as pop-ups, overlays, banners, coupons, etc., on visited websites and/or various interfaces.

Advertisements delivered by adware often promote online scams, untrustworthy or harmful software, and even malware. Clicking on some of these ads can trigger scripts to initiate downloads or installations without user consent.

Ad-supported software may require specific conditions, such as a compatible browser/system or user geolocation, to deliver intrusive ad campaigns. However, regardless of whether Extreme Security Adblocker displays ads or not, its presence poses risks to device and user safety.

Furthermore, this questionable browser extension includes data-tracking features. Information of interest may encompass visited URLs, viewed pages, search queries, Internet cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, financial data, and more. The collected data can potentially be shared with or sold to third parties.

What Are Rogue Browser Extensions?

Rogue browser extensions, also known as malicious or questionable browser extensions, are browser add-ons or plugins that exhibit undesirable and often harmful behavior. These extensions can compromise the security and privacy of users by engaging in activities that go beyond their stated or advertised functionality. Here are key characteristics and risks associated with rogue browser extensions:

Misleading Functionality:
Rogue extensions often present themselves as useful tools, promising certain functionalities such as ad-blocking, security enhancements, or improved browsing experience. However, their actual behavior deviates from their advertised purpose.

Adware and Unwanted Ads:
Some rogue extensions function as adware, displaying intrusive and unwanted advertisements on websites that users visit. These ads can range from pop-ups and banners to overlays and coupons, often promoting scams or untrustworthy products.

Browser Hijacking:
Browser hijackers are rogue extensions that modify browser settings without user consent. This may include changes to the default search engine, homepage, or new tab settings. Browser hijackers can redirect users to unfamiliar or malicious websites.

Data Tracking and Privacy Concerns:
Rogue extensions may have data-tracking functionalities, collecting information about users' browsing activities. This can include visited URLs, viewed pages, search queries, cookies, usernames/passwords, and other personally identifiable details. The collected data may be shared with third parties or used for malicious purposes.

Malicious Redirects:
Some rogue extensions redirect users to malicious websites or phishing pages. This can expose users to scams, phishing attempts, or malware downloads.

Unwanted Installations:
Rogue extensions may facilitate the installation of unwanted software or additional extensions without user consent. This can lead to a cluttered and compromised browser environment.

Persistence Mechanisms:
Rogue extensions often use mechanisms to ensure persistence, making them difficult to remove. Even after attempts to uninstall or disable them, these extensions may re-enable themselves or leave behind remnants in the system.
