Erqw Ransomware is Yet Another Djvu Clone Designed to Encrypt Files for Hostage

Our researchers came across the Erqw ransomware while reviewing the latest submissions on VirusTotal. This particular malware encrypts files and adds the ".erqw" extension to their names. It also leaves a ransom note (the "_readme.txt" file).

For example, Erqw changes "1.jpg" to "1.jpg.erqw" and "2.doc" to "2.doc.erqw". It's been noted that Djvu ransomware is often spread in conjunction with RedLine, Vidar, or other data-stealing malware.

The ransom note states that the files can't be decrypted without the use of special decryption software and a unique key only available from the attackers. The note instructs victims to send an email to either support@freshmail.top or datarestorehelp@airmail.cc within 72 hours. It also mentions that decryption tools are sold at $490 instead of $980 if the victims contact the attackers quickly.

What are the most common ways ransomware like Erqw can infect your system?

Ransomware like Erqw can infect your system in several ways. The most common include:

  • Phishing emails: Ransomware often arrives as an attachment in an email or as a link in an email that downloads the malware onto your device.
  • Malicious websites: Visiting a website that has been compromised with malware or one that is specifically created to distribute malware can infect your device.
  • Drive-by downloads: This type of infection occurs when you visit a website that automatically downloads malware onto your device.
  • Software vulnerabilities: If you have outdated software, it can contain vulnerabilities that can be exploited by ransomware.
  • It is important to be cautious when opening emails, visiting websites, and updating software to help protect your system from ransomware attacks.

Should you attempt paying ransom money to hackers?

It is widely advised by cybersecurity experts that paying the ransom money to hackers is never a guaranteed solution to regain access to encrypted files. In fact, paying the ransom often only funds further criminal activities and may lead to future attacks. Additionally, there is no guarantee that the attackers will provide the decryption key even if the ransom is paid. Hence, it is advisable to consider other options for data recovery, such as restoring from backups or seeking professional assistance.
