What is the ElementBrowser Mac Adware?

mac computer

While examining new file submissions, our research team came across the ElementBrowser application. Upon investigation, we have determined that it is adware belonging to the AdLoad malware family.

Adware, short for advertising-supported software, is designed to display advertisements on various interfaces. These ads promote online scams, unreliable or harmful software, and even malware. Some intrusive ads, when clicked on, can execute scripts that initiate downloads or installations without the user's permission.

It is important to note that genuine products or services advertised through these ads are likely promoted by scammers who exploit affiliate programs to gain illegitimate commissions.

Adware may require specific conditions to run intrusive ad campaigns, such as a compatible browser or system, user geolocation, or visits to certain websites. Even if ElementBrowser does not currently display ads, its presence still poses a risk to the device and user's safety.

While AdLoad applications typically have browser-hijacking capabilities, ElementBrowser did not demonstrate such behavior during testing.

This rogue application is likely equipped with data-tracking features. It may collect information such as visited URLs, viewed pages, search queries, usernames, passwords, internet cookies, personally identifiable information, financial data, and more. This collected information can be shared with or sold to third parties.

How Can Adware Impact Your Browsing Performance and Online Privacy?

Adware can have a significant impact on your browsing performance and online privacy in the following ways:

  • Slow Browsing Speed: Adware often displays numerous ads, which consume bandwidth and resources, resulting in slower browsing speeds. The excessive amount of ads can cause webpages to load slowly, leading to a frustrating browsing experience.
  • Intrusive Advertisements: Adware displays intrusive and disruptive advertisements, including pop-ups, banners, and in-text ads. These ads can cover the content you are trying to view, making it difficult to read or navigate websites effectively.
  • Browser and System Instability: Some adware may introduce instability to your browser or system. It can cause frequent crashes, freezes, or other technical issues that disrupt your browsing sessions and potentially affect the overall stability of your device.
  • Unauthorized Redirects: Adware may redirect your browser to unfamiliar and potentially malicious websites without your consent. These redirects can expose you to additional security risks, including phishing attempts or the download of further malware onto your system.
  • Privacy Invasion: Adware often collects your browsing habits, search queries, and other sensitive information without your knowledge or consent. This invasion of privacy can compromise your personal data, including usernames, passwords, financial information, and personally identifiable details. The collected data can be sold to third parties or used for targeted advertising.
  • Increased Exposure to Malicious Content: Adware advertisements can promote scams, unreliable software, or even malware. Clicking on these ads can lead to the inadvertent download and installation of malicious programs, putting your system at risk of further infections and compromising your online security.
  • Tracking and Profiling: Adware tracks your online activities to build a profile about your preferences and behavior. This information is then used to deliver targeted advertisements. However, this tracking can infringe upon your privacy and create a detailed profile of your online presence.
