DoubleCache Mac Adware Displays Unsolicited Ads

During our investigation of new submissions to VirusTotal, our research team came across the DoubleCache application. Upon thorough analysis, we have identified it as adware, specifically belonging to the AdLoad malware family.

Adware, short for advertising-supported software, operates by displaying third-party graphical content such as pop-ups, banners, surveys, and various ads on different interfaces.

These advertisements serve to promote online scams, untrustworthy or harmful software, and even malware. Some intrusive ads may execute scripts that initiate stealthy downloads or installations when clicked.

It is important to note that while legitimate products or services may occasionally appear in these ads, it is highly unlikely that their developers endorse such promotion. More often, scammers exploit the content's affiliate programs to gain illegitimate commissions.

Advertising-supported software may not run intrusive ad campaigns under specific conditions, such as an incompatible browser or system, or when visiting particular websites. However, the presence of DoubleCache on a system still poses a threat to device and user safety, even if it doesn't display advertisements.

Furthermore, DoubleCache has the potential to gather private information. This includes browsing and search engine histories, internet cookies, usernames and passwords, personally identifiable details, credit card numbers, and more. The collected data can then be monetized through its sale to third parties.

How Can Adware Like DoubleCache Enter Your Mac?

Adware like DoubleCache can enter your Mac through various means. Here are some common methods by which adware can find its way onto your system:

Software Bundling: Adware often comes bundled with free software or applications that you download from the internet. When you install such software without paying close attention to the installation process, the adware may be included as an additional component, and you unknowingly agree to its installation.

Fake Software Updates: Adware can disguise itself as a legitimate software update or installer. When you encounter pop-ups or notifications prompting you to update your software, it is important to verify their authenticity and download updates only from official sources. Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading software from untrustworthy websites.

Infected Email Attachments: Adware can be distributed through infected email attachments. If you receive an email from an unknown sender or a suspicious source, be cautious about opening any attachments. Always scan attachments for malware before opening them, even if the email appears to be from a reputable source.

Malicious Websites: Visiting malicious or compromised websites can expose your Mac to adware. These websites may contain hidden scripts or malicious advertisements that trigger automatic downloads or installations of adware onto your system. It is essential to maintain up-to-date security software and exercise caution when browsing unfamiliar or suspicious websites.
